Inadequate Training Accidents

Powerful machinery with the potential to cause serious injury exists in a number of industries, meaning countless workers are regularly exposed to danger. In order to prevent serious injuries, business owners put in place a number of safeguards. Even the most advanced safeguards, though, can’t protect employees if they don’t have proper training. Workers who use and clean or maintain machinery suffer about 18,000 amputations, lacerations, abrasion, or other injuries per year. These injuries can often lead to permanent disabilities and an inability to work in the future. Further, about 800 deaths are caused each year from machinery.

Poor supervision and insufficient training are two of the most likely causes of machinery accidents in industrial businesses. Training can take a number of forms, and can even be completed in house as long as there are staff members equipped to provide training. Many employees should be trained, including machine operators, anyone who assists in the machine process, or even people who clean and maintain the machines. New staff members are the most likely to need proper training, though seasoned employees also need refresher training. Refresher training is important for a number of workers, including those who sometimes operate the machines, those who haven’t used the machines in a long period of time but will do so again soon, and every few years for all staff members. In addition, training is important when new machines or equipment have been installed, when there is any change in legislation or safety standards, or when new controls have been installed.

When conducting training sessions, employers must be sure to include a number of instructions. Employers must instruct employees on the safeguards, how they provide protection, and the hazards they are meant to protect against. In addition, employers must train the employees on how to properly use not only the machine, but also the safeguards. Training on how to handle situations when a safeguard is missing or damages could also help prevent serious injury. Finally, safety training for workers that are employed to maintain the machine is essential in preventing injury.
