Trans-vaginal Mesh Complications
Recently, an alarming number of women have sustained injuries as a result of trans-vaginal mesh medical procedure complications. Utilized to treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) in woman, trans-vaginal mesh products are manufactured by various well-known companies, including Johnson & Johnson, Tyco Covidian, C.R. Bard, American Medical Systems, Caldera, Gynecare, Mentor, Sofradim, Boston Scientific and Ethicon.
In 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Public Health Notification alerting the public of the potential harm caused by the use of transvaginal mesh in medical procedures. The most common injuries reported to the agency include infection, pain, bleeding, recurrence of prolapse/incontinence and erosion through vaginal epithelium. The FDA notification stated that the agency received more than 1,000 reports of adverse events resulting from transvaginal mesh procedures between 2005 and 2007. Following an analysis of the reported complications and a review of literature on the subject, the FDA identified the use of surgical mesh in medical procedures as an “area of continuing serious concern.”
On July 13, 2011, the FDA released an update to the previously issued Public Health Notification. The FDA update stated that “serious complications” resulting from medical procedures involving the use of trans-vaginal mesh are “not rare.” In addition, the FDA update reported that trans-vaginally placed mesh does not improve the probability of a successful outcome as compared to traditional surgeries that do not utilize mesh. The FDA informed the public that the agency will continue to investigate the use and effect of the medical device.
Filing a Trans-vaginal Mesh Lawsuit
Complications arising from surgical procedures utilizing a trans-vaginal mesh frequently have a devastating effect on victims and their families. Unfortunately, many of the injuries sustained by women following transvaginal mesh medical procedures are the result of a defective product and are avoidable. Women injured by the use of such a medical device can seek financial relief through a trans-vaginal mesh lawsuit, including compensation for:
- Medical Bills
- Lost Wages
- Rehabilitation Costs
- Pain & Suffering
If you have been injured by a defective medical product, financial recovery for your losses can be sought by bringing a Products Liability Lawsuit against the liable designers and/or manufacturers. Although there has not been a transvaginal mesh recall made at this time by the government, women who have sustained injuries from the medical device can still file a lawsuit. Due to the complexity of these types of cases, it is imperative for those women who have experienced complications from their transvaginal mesh surgical procedure to obtain experienced legal representation as soon as possible.
